In general, interaction with enemies has become one of the features of the game, where you can still jump on their backs in order to get out of the abyss, although why bother with these jumps? You can simply kill them all by filling the pit with corpses, which are less problematic to jump on.
Enough space is given to jumping: there is somewhere to jump, and it doesn’t cause much pain. There are not enough tasks, if you step on the button, the door that it opened, you should not look further than the screen, there are also various acrobatics with time dilation, but if you buy the right upgrade, they do not cause problems. Sem, in general, was not a game with riddles, it was a game with secrets, and there are enough of them, as well as jokes with references, and useful things – weapons and “clips” for them.

Well, since I’m talking about weapons and “clips” for them, it’s worth talking about the main feature of the game – the upgrade system. What is needed to arrange a local Armageddon? You just take one barrel and sculpt a second one on top, using a special paperclip; the paperclips and trunks themselves lie in levels, both in plain sight and in secret nooks and crannies. What are the enemies worth, not only are they, by their very idea, brilliant in their absurdity, they are also not poorly drawn, just like everything else in the game. A certain style of the game is largely conveyed by the hand-drawn picture.
In principle, the game was good and even coped with its task – it warmed up attention to the series, but due to the monotony (and it was so monotonous that even I, a fan of both Side-Scrollers and Sam, couldn’t get through more than a third) it did not gain fame, either from critics or from players.
Perhaps the publisher, Croteam, didn’t care, but Mommy’s Best Games couldn’t abandon their brainchild and in February 2013 released a free add-on Serious Sam: Double D: XXL. The name XXL fully justifies itself, because now there is a lot of everything! If earlier there were 8 trunks, now there are already eight of them! But from now on, everyone has four possible upgrades (including such samples as a bee thrower); all this can be upgraded from the merchant, for money that began to fly out of defeated enemies. Co-op appeared, but only locally, the second hero was Huff, which is sad, because everyone expected the return of the old guard, but Huff coolly advertised the original Double D. Perhaps this addon will seem so good to someone that it will even force someone to go outside the company and play “tests”, although no, I’ve probably already exaggerated.
New enemies, weapons, bonus levels, co-op, all this did its job and “Passing” Double D reached the “Commendable” bar. This game is worth checking out for all fans of the series and side-scrollers, as well as those who tried the original and fell asleep, and those who didn’t like Double D have nothing to do in XXL
